Why are Bunny Rabbits part of our Easter tradition?

The Easter bunny’s fluffy form might seem like an odd fit for a religious holiday, but its connection to Easter makes sense, drawing on both ancient pagan traditions and later – Christian symbolism. Which is where the rabbit idea first sprouted.

Way back, pagans worshipped a goddess named Eostre, who brought the joy of new beginnings and fresh starts each year. So, Eostre symbolized hopeand growth. These same themes echo in the (Christian) Easter story of Jesus’ resurrection. Rabbits – all cute and cuddly and incredibly reproductive – were like furry representations of these happy things! Which have therefore made bunnies a natural symbol for hope, new life and rebirth.

Then, jump forward a few hundred years to Germany. Kids there told stories about a special rabbit called “Osterhase” who gave treats to good children on Easter. When Germans moved to North America, they brought Osterhase with them, and he hopped his way into the egg-hiding bunny we know today!

That’s why the sight of a chocolate bunny peeking from a basket on Easter morning feels so good! It’s a reminder that even after winter’s chill, springtime and happiness are always on the way.

So, now you know the story behind all of these Easter bunny patterns! Remember – it’s a time for celebration of fresh beginnings and springtime joy, all wrapped up in one adorable, fluffy package!

Tips for Crocheting Bunnies Successfully

  • As with any crochet pattern, read these patterns ahead of time, to make sure that you have all the pattern’s supplies list and tools you need before you start.
  • Each pattern has a recommended yarn suggestion in it’s materials section. Such as these favourite yarn choices of mine that I would like to suggest:
    1. Super Bulky Yarn (6) – Premier Basix, Bernat Blanket, Chenille Home Slim, Sweet Snuggle Lite
    2. Light Super Bulky (6), Bulky (5) – Premier Parfait Chunky, Hobbii Honey Bunny, Bernat Velvet
    3. Medium (Worsted Weight) (4) – Hobbii Boheme Velvet Double, Bernat Baby Velvet, We Crochet Brava Worsted
  • If you’re going to be doing a lot of crocheting I also recommend an ergonomic style hook. My favourites are the Clover Amour and Clover Soft Touch hooks.
  • I like to use stitch markers for all of my crochet projects. I suggest that you invest in some quality, quick release stitch markers, to keep your place as you’re crocheting. They really do save you time!
  • In most of the crochet bunny patterns, a face of some sort is recommended. I personally prefer the quick option of adding 12mm safety eyes. But of course hand embroidering facial features works well too! It’s often a great idea to consider the age of the person you’re gifting your bunny to.

  • I have free tutorials for Amigurumi technique skills! Click the links if you would like a little extra help with these things:
  • Make sure to make a gauge swatch before you begin! Sometimes you may need to use a smaller hook for Amigurumi – otherwise, you may end up with loose crochet stitches, resulting in large holes where stuffing will come out.
  • I suggest that you don’t try to attempt to make any changes to the pattern you’re using. Unless you’re experienced in adapting patterns, you might not achieve the expected result you were hoping for.
