If you’re a fan of porridge or other types of oats for breakfast, you’re following in the footsteps of soldiers from Ancient Roman times. Their type of porridge wasn’t exactly the same as the type we eat today, of course. Food has evolved a lot since those days. If you’re looking for new vegan porridge recipes (or oats, granola, muesli, etc.), you’ve come to the right place – I’ve found a whole bunch of them for you to taste and enjoy. (Well, hopefully!)

Shall we jump right in? I think we should.

85 Vegan Porridge Recipes

The kind of porridge that Ancient Roman soldiers ate was created from barley or spelt wheat that was roasted to start with, then pounded into a fine powder, then mixed with water. The result, according to some, is a breakfast dish with a texture and taste similar to that of polenta from Italy.

These days, porridge is a bit thicker and lumpier than it was before, and it is enjoyed with a wide variety of delicious toppings.

Nuts are full of all sorts of healthy fats and other nutrients. Pistachio nuts, for example, contain things like beta-carotene, lutein, and other antioxidants. Walnuts are jam-packed with Omega 3, and Brazil nuts have high levels of selenium, magnesium, and fibre. Why aren’t you eating more nuts for breakfast?

Quite a few countries and cultures around the world actually eat porridge as a savoury dish instead of a sweet one. In South Korea, for example, Jatjuk, also known as pine nut porridge, is commonly eaten savoury, with salt and crushed pine nuts on top. South Africa has Phutu, too. This is a thick and crumbly porridge made with maize meal.

Vegan Oatmeal Ideas

I bet I know what you’re thinking right now. You’re wondering what I’ve got separate sections for oatmeal and porridge when they’re the same thing, aren’t you? They’re not actually the same thing.

Porridge can be made with a whole bunch of different things these days, as shown by the vast number of different sweet and savoury vegan porridge recipes on this list. Peas, buckwheat, barley, rice, corn, and wheat are all ingredients used in porridge.

Oats or oatmeal, on the other hand, are exactly as they sound: oats that have been ground, separated from the bran.

Vegan Granola Ideas

So, we’ve established the difference between porridge and oats/oatmeal, but where does granola fit into the mix? Well, when talking about oats and porridge, you’re generally talking about a relatively plain dish – oats and milk or milk substitute, sugar, a pinch of salt, etc. – without other ingredients. Granola is different in that it has a bunch of tasty stuff in there, alongside the rolled oats.

These ingredients can include things like dried fruit and various nuts, seeds, honey (for non-vegans), etc. Essentially, though, the possibilities are endless. There are so many ingredients you could throw together in a muesli fashion. Just take a peek at some of these if you don’t believe me:

Vegan Overnight Oats

It is normal to get up in the morning and then make your oatmeal or breakfast oat-based dish, but overnight oats offer up a slightly different approach – and a time-saving one. Rather than preparing everything in the morning, the oats are soaked overnight (just as the name would suggest).

85 Vegan Porridge Recipes | Buzzy Kitchen (7)

There’s no need to cook and soften them in the morning, because they’ll already be soaked and soft. Just add your favourite toppings and start your day. It really is as simple as that.

And just in case you’re looking for some inspiration, here’s some of my favourite vegan overnight oats ideas:

Vegan Muesli Ideas

Muesli and granola aren’t the same thing, just in case you thought they were. I genuinely thought they were just two names for the same breakfast dish, but they’re not. Muesli is created with mostly raw ingredients. Granola, on the other hand, is made with baked oats.

85 Vegan Porridge Recipes | Buzzy Kitchen (8)

Essentially, granola is the baked version of muesli… sort of. They’re both healthy breakfast dishes, can easily be customized to suit a wide variety of tastes and dietary restrictions, and can be enjoyed any ol’ time of the day. I love having muesli for dinner. How do you feel about it?

I really hope you’ve found at least a couple of recipes you fancy trying for yourself. As always, though, I thoroughly recommend playing around with different ingredients to find something that you find simply delicious.
