Pausing CenturyLink service

Like most other providers, CenturyLink allows you to put a temporary pause on your account if you’re heading out on vacation or won’t use your service for a short period. It’s a good alternative to cancellation if you’ll only be gone for a couple of months or less.

Canceling your CenturyLink service

If you don’t want to transfer your CenturyLink service or use a temporary pause, you can also cancel your service altogether. You can cancel your CenturyLink service in many different ways, including over the phone, via online chat, in person by visiting an CenturyLink store, through an online form or via mail. You can use the same methods for canceling both internet and television service.

Are you eligible to cancel your CenturyLink service?

Since CenturyLink doesn’t offer long-term contracts, there are no early termination fees (ETFs) to worry about when you cancel CenturyLink internet. However, you may still need to cover other costs when you terminate your service. For example, CenturyLink will charge a fee if you leased a modem and don’t return it within 30 days of cancellation (more on that in the next section).

Canceling your CenturyLink service online

Unfortunately, you cannot put in your CenturyLink disconnect request online. The company has a live chat feature that’s helpful for support issues, but the representatives will direct you to call the CenturyLink customer service phone number if you need to cancel.

Canceling your CenturyLink service over the phone

If you’re an internet customer (including bundles), here’s how to request that CenturyLink stop service to your home.

  • Have your account number and address ready
  • Call CenturyLink at (800) 244-1111, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Inform the representative that you’d like to cancel your internet service

To cancel the TV portion of your bundle, you’ll need to contact your TV provider directly (DIRECTV or DISH).

Canceling your CenturyLink service in person

The provider does not have any brick-and-mortar stores, so you’ll need to have CenturyLink disconnect service by phone.

How to return your CenturyLink equipment

Once you’ve submitted your cancellation notice, you will have 30 days to return any of your leased equipment (such as a modem/router). Otherwise, you’ll be on the hook for the entire retail cost of each device. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Grab your modem/router, cords and any other accessories provided by CenturyLink.
  2. Place them in a well-padded box with rigid sides and flaps, sealing it with sturdy packaging tape. If you’re reusing an old box, make sure any previous shipping labels and addresses are removed.
  3. Visit the CenturyLink cancellation page and click the green “Print a Return Label” button to receive your shipping label.
  4. Add the label to the box and cover it with clear packing tape.
  5. Drop off your package at a UPS Store or authorized UPS Shipping Center (like Staples or Parcel Plus).

If you don’t have a printer, the UPS Store can print your label for you. Alternatively, you can ask CenturyLink to send you a return label by mail through the cancelation page linked above.

FAQs

Will I need to pay my full rate if I temporarily pause my CenturyLink account? CenturyLink ‌|‌ ‌Cancel or transfer your service | Allconnect.com (1)

In most cases, you’ll pay a reduced rate when you put your account on hold. There’s also typically no charge to turn your service back on.

After you’ve called CenturyLink to cancel your internet or bundle service, you’ll have 30 days to return any leased equipment. From there, you’ll receive a final “closing” bill from CenturyLink, which outlines the charges for your last month of service. After that, you may receive a revised final bill if there are any fees that weren’t captured in the previous bill, including charges for not returning equipment. A third final bill may also be sent if outstanding charges remain.

CenturyLink is available in 36 states, with an especially large presence in Arizona, Colorado, North Carolina, Oregon, Washington and a handful of other states. Check out the Allconnect internet provider comparison tool to find plans in your area and sign up for service.
