Crochet Mini Easter Basket Pattern Details

These crochet baskets are worked from the bottom up starting with the basket bottom worked in rounds of double crochet stitches.

After completing the bottom of the basket you will stop increasing, work the first round in the back loop only and beginning working the color work portion of the basket on the sides. The basket sides are worked in the front post dc color work technique which is really simple.

I have a complete FPdc stitch video tutorial to help you read a graph, tips on how to change colors as well as how to carry colors as needed for the baskets. This would be a great project for beginners to practice this fun color work technique.

Once the graph is completed you will work a final round of edging at the top of the basket in reverse single crochet which is also known as the crab stitch. I have a complete Crab Crochet Stitch photo and video tutorial to help with this as well. This will help tighten up the top edge of the basket. If the crab stitch isn’t one of your favorites, simply work a round of regular single crochet on the top edge to complete.

In order to make these baskets as quickly as possible, I chose not to add a handle. However, adding a handle would make thiis basket so cute for a toddler to carry. I would recommend a simple handle worked over a pipe cleaner to keep its shape.

This is a fantastic project for raiding your yarn stash especially those bits and pieces of scraps you have! I used Red Heart Super Saver yarn which is a medium acrylic worsted weight yarn. For smaller baskets you could use DK Light weight yarn, cotton, or even a bulky yarn for a larger size basket! Use Easter colors or in your little one’s favorite color to personalize each one.

Another great way to make your basket larger would be to hold two strands of yarn together and pair with a larger crochet hook.

I used plastic safety eyes and a safety nose for the bunny. For the Peek a Boo Bunny Hat I had found buttons that look like safety eyes in order to keep the hat from being too poky on the inside. However, since you won’t need to worry about that with a basket, safety eyes are a great option if you have them on hand. However if you still have those buttons from the hat left over you could sew those on instead.

  • G = grey
  • Y = yellow
  • RS = right side
  • ch(s) = chain(s)
  • dc = double crochet

  • FPdc = front post double crochet (see special stitches section below)
  • Rnd(s) = round(s)
  • sc = single crochet
  • rsc = reverse single crochet (see special stitches section below)

Special Stitches:

FPdc (front post double crochet stitch):Yo and insert your hook from front to back to front around the dc stitch post from the row below, yo, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yo, pull through 2 loops, yo, pull through remaining 2 loops.

rsc= working from left to right, insert hook from front to back in next st to the right, yo, pull loop through st, yo, pull through 2 loops on hook.

Pattern Notes:

  • Three different graphs are provided – lamb, chick and bunny.
  • Worked from bottom up.
  • Graph is worked as FPdc around the stitch in the round directly below, with the exception of the first round which is a round of double crochet.
  • Each pixel of the graph corresponds to 1 FPdc (rounds 2 – 8) or dc (round 1) stitch.
  • Worked in the round without turning. Slip stitch join at the end of each round into the top of the first FPdc, not the beginning ch-2.
  • To work color changes, work last dc stitch before new color until there are two loops on the hook, pull in new color with last yo.
  • To reduce ends to weave in, I carried the non-working yarn as yarn “floats” on the wrong side of the hat.
  • Ch-2 at beginning of each round does not count as a stitch.
