Kroger is a family of companies that originally started as a small, local grocery store out of downtown Cincinnati.

With over 19 brands under the Kroger umbrella, they’ve opened nearly 2,800 stores in 35 states.

Brands like Fred Meyer, QFC, Ralph’s, and others are some you may have heard of.

Large companies like Kroger often aim to remain innovative and strive to keep the customer shopping experience as simple and convenient as possible.

That being said, Apple Pay has become one of the most commonly used payment methods in the United States for those exact reasons: simple and convenient to use.

Apple Pay has become so popular that it is being widely accepted by a large percent of established retailers.

This may leave you wondering if an established company like Kroger accepts Apple Pay in their stores.

Kroger Does Not take Apple Pay in 2023.

Sadly, beginning in 2023 Kroger stopped accepting Apple Pay in their stores.

Apple Pay was replaced by the Kroger App, which allows you to scan your phone via the app at checkout to pay for your items.

Kroger also accepts all major debit, credit, and American Express cards, as well as cash, checks, and money orders for payment.

How to use your iPhone to Pay at Kroger Stores

As of 2019, Kroger introduced Kroger Pay, a cashless mobile payment alternative, in an effort to streamline the checkout process for anyone with a smartphone.

A one-time quick response code or QR code is produced while using Kroger Pay.

The QR code on your mobile phone will securely send your payment details directly to the store when you check out.

Your loyalty card information and payment information are safely combined via Kroger Pay for a faster, more pleasant shopping experience.

This is a wonderful contactless payment solution for anyone with a smart phone who enjoys purchasing at Kroger, even if it does not employ NFC technology like Apple Pay.

Is Kroger Pay Accepted Elsewhere?

Kroger Pay is accepted at contactless-enabled POS terminals in Kroger Companies throughout the United States.

The shoppers’ lane, self-checkout, as well as in-store pharmacy, wine, and other alcoholic drink outlets, all accept Kroger Pay whether shopping online or in-store using Kroger Pay.

Kroger Pay is not currently accessible at drive-thru pharmacies, gas stations, and fuel stores, some independent stores within Kroger stores, or in any additional retailers outside the Kroger family of stores.

You may need to check with your chosen Kroger pick-up station to see if they offer Kroger pay for pick-up and delivery.

The Kroger Co. Family of Stores includes:

What payment methods are accepted at Kroger stores?

Debit and credit cards are accepted at Kroger, just as they are at all the other big-name grocery stores.

Kroger also accepts personal checks, WIC cards, and SNAP/EBT cards in addition to cash and credit cards.

Aside from the aforementioned payment options, at one point Kroger announced that they were looking into the addition of other contact-less payment methods such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, Fitbit Pay, and mobile banking applications.

However, they decided to stop accepting mobile payments like Apple Pay and Android Pay and the decision to do so remains unclear.

The reasons for Kroger’s move remain a mystery, but the supermarket chain has launched its own mobile payment app, dubbed Kroger pay.

This takes the place of other payment methods like Apple Pay at all participating Kroger stores.
