Potential Benefits of Celery Juice

Celery is naturally loaded with naturalsodium and antioxidants. It has a high water content and fiber content.

Celery and celery seeds, also known asApium graveolens, have been traditionally used in traditional medicine for centuries to help with various conditions.

There is also a nice bit of modern scientific evidence showing the benefits of eating celery, including on high cholesterol, Parkinson’s disease, infertility, and cancer.

So, even though there isn’t a lot of specific research on drinking celery juice, the science does seem to agree that celery is a healthy food to eat. Celery is a good source of vitamin C and vitamin K, plus antioxidants that can fight free radicals (it’s on my list of green vegetables).

Both celery and celery leaves have anti-inflammatory properties.

Bloating & Digestion

There are a lot of claims that drinking celery juice can help reduce bloating and help with digestion. It really depends on the individual and what your digestive system is used to.

This juice can help with digestion, bloating and detoxification, but it kind of depends on what you’re used to and what state of health your gut is in when you start.

In regards to the other supposed benefits of drinking celery juice to help reverse chronic diseases including liver disease, high blood pressure, acid reflux, or heart disease, I would advise you to consult with your healthcare provider since there just isn’t enough scientific evidence to support those claims.

Ultimately, you’ll have to see for yourself if you get positive effects from consuming cold-pressed juice like organic celery juice or other vegetable juices.

Easy Celery Juice Recipe (Juicer or Blender) (2)
  • Not surprisingly, celery juice is made from fresh organic celery stalks! I always have a bunch on hand; celery is part of my Clean Eating Shopping List and is also on my list of the best vegetables for picky eaters. You’ll need about one bunch of celery to make a batch of celery juice. I like to use organic celery. You might also like my recipe for Apple Celery Juice if you want a sweeter juice.
  • I also like to use a fresh peeled lime in my juice to help balance the flavor of the juice.

Please see the recipe card at the end of this post for the exact ingredients and measurements.

Celery Juicing Tips

  • Making celery juice is actually really easy! You only need celery stalks and a juicer. Or, if you have a blender, you can also make fresh juice, but you’ll need to strain it through a nut milk bag.
  • Consider buying organic celery if you can, since celery is often sprayed with pesticides and is on the Dirty Dozen list.
  • I also like to include a fresh, peeled lime as an optional ingredient. I like how it adds brightness and some extra flavor. You can also use fresh lemon juice to help improve the taste of celery juice. I’ve been known to juice an apple with the celery, too, but that’s also optional and increases the sugar content.
  • For the Medical Medium straight celery juice recipe, just use 100% celery. Do not add anything else in your cup of celery juice as the best way to consume it.

Recipe FAQs

Can I make this celery juice recipe in a regular blender?

I haven’t tried making celery juice in a regular blender as opposed to a high-speed blender, but I’m sure it will work. If you want to try it, I would suggest chopping your celery into 1-inch pieces and adding at least 1/2 cup of water. Blend for at least a minute before straining the celery juice. See my list of the best juicer blenders.

What does celery juice taste like?

Not surprisingly, it tastes like celery. If you don’t like the taste of celery, you most certainly will not like the taste of this drink. I am a fan of the flavor, but sometimes I’ll juice a peeled lime (or lemon) and maybe an apple for added sweetness and brightness.

Can you add other fruits and veggies?

Yes, I like to add a peeled lime and a chopped green apple. The other ingredients make the juice so much more palatable. But, according to the Medical Medium, you should only use celery. So, it depends on what your goals are.

Can you make this ahead of time?

Yes, but I would try to consume it within 48 hours of making it for optimal nutrition. Store it in a tightly sealed container in the refrigerator.

Are there negative side effects to drinking celery juice?

Yes, celery juice can cause diarrhea in some people. If that occurs, try drinking a much smaller amount the next day and work up the amount you drink. Consult your medical practitioner if your diarrhea continues.

Fresh celery juice may also cause some bloating until your body adjusts to the fiber that remains in the juice. The bloating should lessen or stop after your digestive tract adjusts.

My Celery Juice Experience

While some people are very disciplined about drinking celery juice first thing in the morning, I do not find that appealing at all.

Sometimes I will use celery juice in my smoothie recipe. But, more often, I drink it as a mid-morning snack on an empty stomach.

I have not tried drinking it consistently in the morning. I drink it mostly for the extra fiber and antioxidants, not to try and treat any condition. To be honest, I consider celery juice just as one of the many green juices that are part of a healthy balanced diet that can contribute to overall health.

Now it’s your turn! Tell me about your experience with juicing and whether or not you’ve incorporated this practice into your daily wellness routine. Has it helped with your chronic illnesses or blood sugar levels? Some people also think it can help with skin health, brain function, and cholesterol levels.
