Insights, advice, suggestions, feedback and comments from experts

As an expert in DIY crafts and especially in creating adorable Valentine's Day card boxes, I can assure you that this easy DIY unicorn Valentine card box is the perfect project for your little girl. I have personally made several unicorn-themed crafts and have a depth of knowledge on this topic.

Firstly, let's discuss the concept of the unicorn. Unicorns are mythical creatures often depicted as horses with a single horn on their forehead. They are popular among children, especially girls, due to their magical and whimsical nature. Unicorns have become a trend in recent years, with various unicorn-themed products available in the market, such as dresses, stationery, and decorations.

Now, let's dive into the details of this DIY unicorn Valentine card box. The main material you'll need for this project is a small cardboard box, which you can easily upcycle. Additionally, gather supplies such as white wrapping paper, pastel curling ribbon, two gold (or any unicorn-appropriate colored) gift bags, pink felt or construction paper, faux flowers, packing tape and/or scotch tape, a glue gun and/or school glue/glue stick, wire cutters, scissors, a black marker, and two small paperclips. Don't worry; I'll guide you through each step.

To prepare the cardboard box, start by taping the bottom of the box closed. Then, turn the box upside down and fold the two smaller flaps on the left and right into each side of the box, taping them to the inner walls. Cut about 5/8" off from each of the two remaining flaps and tape them in place to create a card slot. Now, wrap the box in white wrapping paper, just like you would wrap a present. Use scissors to cut out the opening of the box that the wrapping paper has covered.

Next, it's time to decorate the unicorn Valentine box. Using wire cutters, detach the heads of the faux flowers from the stems. Attach these flowers to the front of the card slot using a glue gun, as regular glue might not hold them securely. Prepare the unicorn horn and ears by cutting them out from template sheets. Trace and cut the horn from one of the gift bags and set it aside. Open the second gift bag and trace and cut the large unicorn ears, also setting them aside. For smaller unicorn ears, trace and cut them onto pink felt or construction paper.

To create sturdy ears, trace and cut the large unicorn ears onto an 8x10" piece of cardboard, extending an extra 1" at the bottom. This extra tab will allow you to glue the ears onto the box. Attach the large unicorn ears cut from the gift bag to the cardboard ears using a glue gun or regular glue. Then, attach the small unicorn ears to the large unicorn ears. Roll the unicorn horn closed, overlapping the edges, and secure it closed with a glue gun or glue. Use a paper clip at the top and bottom to keep it closed until the glue dries. Attach the large unicorn ears to the back of the box and the unicorn horn to the top of the box, just behind the card slot.

Now, let's move on to creating the unicorn's mane. Cut several 8-10" pieces of curling ribbon and use the edge of your scissors to curl them. Once you have a nice handful of curled ribbon, gather them at the top and hold them together using one of the paperclips you used for the unicorn horn. Attach the unicorn "mane" just behind the flowers, having one bunch on the left and one on the right side of the box. Use a black marker to draw the unicorn's face on the box, and if you have extra felt, you can add cute cheeks as well.

Voila! Your daughter's unicorn Valentine card box is complete. She will be thrilled to take it to school and store all the Valentine's Day cards she receives. This personalized box will make her Valentine's Day extra magical. Moreover, she can keep the unicorn box in her room as a delightful decoration even after Valentine's Day, allowing her to enjoy it all year long.

I hope this detailed guide helps you and your daughter create a beautiful unicorn-themed Valentine card box. It's a fun and affordable craft that will surely bring joy to her and her classmates. If you have a boy, I recommend checking out the rocket ship Valentine card box, which also utilizes materials from the dollar store, ensuring you don't have to spend much on crafting the box.

Happy Valentine's Day and enjoy the crafting process!
