Former Golden Corral building in Cape Coral faces $500K in damages following vandalism (2024)

A group of vandals broke into a vacant Golden Corral building and caused nearly $500,000 worth of damage.This happened at the old Cape Coral Golden Corral off Andalusia Boulevard. The Golden Corral permanently closed after the Coronavirus pandemic. Jack Flechner bought the property and is planning on turning it into a Twin Peaks.Flechner said a group of vandals climbed up the ladder that's attached to the back of the building and sprayed explicit graffiti all over the roof. They also stole rooftop air conditioner units. "Not only did they steal a lot of the equipment from the roof. They also decided to treat it like their art gallery," Flechner said. "They put a lot of graffiti pictures up there. Some of them were quite comical!" The thieves didn't stop there. They took apart a metal exhaust fan on the roof, climbed through the hole, and shimmied their way inside the building."They apparently climbed on the roof and got access, somehow by going down the chimney or whatever for exhaust fans and cut out a hole in the metal kinda like a James Bond kind of thing," Flechner said."They knew exactly how to get in the building and this is not their first rodeo," he said.Flechner said the culprits gutted the inside of the Golden Corral. They stole stainless steel, copper wires, plumbing fixtures, used cooking oil and even parts of toilets."They set off one of the fire extinguishers just for fun because there’s a lot of white residue in there but no graffiti inside, just destruction and damage," Flechner said.The Cape Coral Police Department said they are currently investigating and still trying to find the culprits.Flechner said the police told him they believe the vandals may have been living inside the Golden Corral.Flechner is the franchisee for several Twin Peaks restaurants in South Florida. He has one in Fort Myers and is about to open one in Naples.Flechner said the Cape Coral Twin Peaks will still be opened, however, it will now be more expensive to build and take more time.He estimated completion this fall."We're working on plans to convert it now," he said. "We're currently going through the City of Cape Coral permitting process, so the quicker they move the quicker we can get open."
