Do PSLs hold their value? A lot depends on winning – and timing

As Buffalo Bills season ticket holders contemplate whether they should shell out thousands of dollars on personal seat licenses at the new stadium, most also are considering the type of investment they are potentially making.

The purchase of a PSL will provide fans the right to be season ticket holders for at least the life of the 30-year lease at the new stadium in Orchard Park, but buyers eventually will be able to sell the licenses as well.

The question is: For how much?

Having the opportunity to sell a PSL means season ticket holders will have some options.

Some fans will make the purchase of PSLs with the intent to see their favorite team for as long as possible and either stay for 30 years or pass them along to family or friends. They will justify the cost by dividing it into all the years of use.

But other season ticket holders may see it as a quasi-investment – or at least a chance to recoup some or all of the upfront cost later on.

In Buffalo, with high demand for season tickets – there’s a waiting list with thousands of people on it – and a lower supply of PSLs in a smaller capacity stadium of around 60,000 seats, some fans figure PSLs could even sell on secondary markets at a profit.

Whether PSLs hold their value will likely depend on the timing of their sale: what is the life remaining on the PSL – not every PSL plays by the same rules – and how is the team performing at the time or how bright is its future.

It also depends on the market and how many potential buyers are out there. There’s an unanswered question in Buffalo, because PSLs are new to this market. As the second-smallest market in the NFL ahead of only Green Bay, is Buffalo big enough to drive interest in the resale market, once all the hoopla of moving into a new stadium dries up?
