Hit Man (2023)

Jordan Peele's Nope is now available to watch on Netflix (4)

Hit Man debuted with rave reviews in September 2023 at its Venice premiere, leaving the rest of us counting the months to be able to watch it.

Fortunately, Richard Linklater's rom-com proved worth the wait when it finally landed on Netflix. Inspired by a crazy true story, it sees Glen Powell play college professor Gary Johnson who poses as a fake hitman for the police, only to fall in love with one of his potential marks (Adria Arjona).

Hit Man is every bit as funny, sexy and playful as we were promised, confirming Glen Powell as a genuine movie star.

Godzilla Minus One (2023)

Jordan Peele's Nope is now available to watch on Netflix (5)

This record-breaking, Oscar-winning Godzilla movie is a must-watch on Netflix, regardless of how much you know about the iconic reptilian monster.

Set in the aftermath of World War II in Japan, Godzilla Minus One shows how a country at its lowest point is forced to face a new threat in the form of a gigantic, nuclear-powered lizard.

As an entirely separate story from the Monsterverse (which recently released Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire), this Japanese movie is an amazing watch.

Arrival (2016)

Jordan Peele's Nope is now available to watch on Netflix (6)

Arrival is so good that it's Denis Villeneuve's best movie, ahead of the likes of Dune: Part Two and Sicario.

The 2016 sci-fi centres on linguist Louise (Amy Adams) and physicist Ian (Jeremy Renner) who must find a way to talk to the aliens who have just arrived on Earth, in order to stave off a devastating war.

As well as engaging the brain, Arrival also tugs at the heartstrings with an ending reveal that still lingers in our brain after all these years. Watch it once, never forget it.

Top Gun: Maverick (2023)

Jordan Peele's Nope is now available to watch on Netflix (7)

As well as being one of the best action movies on Netflix, Top Gun: Maverick deserves its place as being just one of the outright best movies on the streaming service too.

The long-awaited legacy sequel sees Tom Cruise reprise his classic role as Maverick returns to Top Gun to train up recruits, including Goose's son Rooster (Miles Teller) for a dangerous mission.

It proved worth the wait as it delivered genuinely thrilling and breathtaking action sequences, alongside a surprisingly effective emotional core. You'll definitely feel the need for speed all over again.

Lady Macbeth (2016)

Jordan Peele's Nope is now available to watch on Netflix (8)

Florence Pugh is one of the world's biggest stars and her talent was clear from her breakthrough role in Lady Macbeth (no relation to Shakespeare).

She had made her movie debut in The Falling, but William Oldroyd's Lady Macbeth was her first lead role as Katherine, a young woman trapped in an unhappy, arranged marriage who begins to rebel against what society has planned for her.

Pugh views it as her game-changing role and it only takes one watch of the intense and unexpected Lady Macbeth to see why.

Past Lives (2023)

Jordan Peele's Nope is now available to watch on Netflix (9)

Celine Song might have missed out on a Best Director nomination, but Past Lives rightly landed Best Picture at Best Original Screenplay nominations at this year's Oscars.

It's an achievement all the more impressive as the romantic drama marked Song's feature debut. As she's spoken about, it's a deeply personal movie, centred on the story of Nora and Hae Sung who reunite two decades later.

Greta Lee, Teo Yoo and John Magaro all put in masterful performances to bring Song's beautiful script to life, resulting in a quietly heartbreaking watch.

The Favourite (2018)

Jordan Peele's Nope is now available to watch on Netflix (10)

Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone are back in Oscar contention with Poor Things, so there's no better time to look back on their previous Oscar contender The Favourite.

The black comedy saw Olivia Colman pick up Best Actress for her portrayal of Queen Anne, with Stone and Rachel Weisz being nominated for Best Supporting Actress for their roles as Sarah Churchill and Abigail Hill, respectively.

They're competing to be the Queen's favourite, setting the stage for a hilarious, dark and very rude comedy.

Be quick though as Dune is being removed from Netflix on July 8, 2024.

Society of the Snow (2023)

Jordan Peele's Nope is now available to watch on Netflix (13)

Society of the Snow is one of Netflix's most-watched non-English language movies, a spectacular production that brings back to life a shocking true story.

Talk to Me (2023)

Jordan Peele's Nope is now available to watch on Netflix (15)

One of the most terrifying movies in recent memory, Talk to Me is the perfect horror movie to watch on Netflix.

Directed by Australian brothers Danny and Michael Philippou, the movie follows a group of teenagers playing a dangerous game, conjuring spirits through an embalmed ceramic hand. When they touch it and say 'talk to me', they are able not only to see spirits, but also to let them invade their bodies.

Of course, it doesn't go well for them, particularly when Mia (Sophie Wilde) breaks the rules in order to talk to her deceased mother.

The ending of Talk to Me is still haunting us, so let's hope the sequel Talk 2 Me doesn't take too long.

Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget (2023)

Jordan Peele's Nope is now available to watch on Netflix (16)

We had to wait 23 years for Ginger, Rocky and co to return, but Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget proved to be worth the wait.

Yes, we're still not quite over the recastings, yet once you get used to it, the sequel delivers the wit and warmth that you expect from an Aardman movie as Ginger and Rocky break into a chicken farm to free their daughter Molly.

While it might not be quite as good as the original (few animations are), Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget will still provide fun for all the family.

Leave the World Behind (2023)

Jordan Peele's Nope is now available to watch on Netflix (17)

Leave the World Behind was the Netflix movie everybody was talking about over Christmas 2023 and beyond.

Based on the bestselling novel, the apocalyptic thriller sees Amanda (Julia Roberts) and Clay (Ethan Hawke) take their children to a vacation home, only for GH (Mahershala Ali) and his daughter Ruth (Myha'la) to show up at midnight claiming to be the owners.

This is the kick-off for a tense, original and totally gripping watch that sees the two families try to put aside their differences as the apocalypse appears to be happening in the world. You won't get all the answers, but you will be entertained.

Whiplash (2014)

Jordan Peele's Nope is now available to watch on Netflix (18)

There are very few scarier things than having JK Simmons screaming "Not my tempo!" at you.

Before La La Land, Damien Chazelle delivered this high-intensity, critically-acclaimed drama starring Miles Teller. He plays Andrew, a young music student who wants to become the best jazz drummer of his generation. However, nothing has prepared him for the ruthlessness of his teacher, Terence Fletcher, whose methods tend to push his students to the absolute limit.

This tour de force between Teller and Simmons is amazing to watch, leading to an extremely stressful ending.

The Good Nurse (2022)

Room (2015)

Jordan Peele's Nope is now available to watch on Netflix (20)

Brie Larson had a big 2023 with The Marvels and Lessons in Chemistry, so there's no better time to revisit her breakthrough role.

A heartbreaking and powerful adaptation of Emma Donoghue's novel of the same name sees Larson play Joy, a 24-year-old who's been held captive for seven years with her son Jack (Jacob Tremblay), born during her captivity.

Her performance rightly saw Larson land the Best Actress award at the Oscars, BAFTAs and Golden Globes.

The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

Jordan Peele's Nope is now available to watch on Netflix (21)

Martin Scorsese is back on the big screen with Killers of the Flower Moon, but if you don't fancy a trip to the cinema, you can also check one of his best movies with Leonardo DiCaprio.

The Wolf of Wall Street is an outrageous and hilarious biopic that tells the story of Jordan Belfort (DiCaprio) as he rose to the top of Wall Street, before a spectacular collapse which Scorsese conveys in supremely entertaining fashion.

It's another lengthy Scorsese movie clocking in at three hours, but it rattles by in such fashion that you'll never feel the runtime.

You've got less than a month to watch it as The Wolf of Wall Street is being removed from Netflix on July 9, 2024.
