Peppermint Oreo Cookie Balls | Christmas Cookie Recipe! (1)

Oh - these are just amazing! If you tried my Oreo Truffles Recipe, you know how decadent they are. This recipe for Peppermint Oreo Cookie Balls just steps it up another notch!

The seasonal Peppermint Oreos are the key to making these cake balls perfect. The cookie is the traditional chocolate cookie that we all know & love, but the filling is red and peppermint-flavored! They are awesome all on their own, but when they are ground up and made in to cake balls, covered in chocolate and coated with crushed candy canes (or Starlight mints)? Oh - BABY!

We have kind of a "rule" in my house. Most sweet recipes that I make because I intend to post them on this site are made on a Saturday. The reason? Because I just take everything to church on Sunday to add to the Hospitality buffet. My kids are usually pretty good with that rule. But these? I was not ALLOWED to take them to church! They are that good!

Hennyway - to make them, you will need

  • 1 pkg (8 oz) cream cheese, softened
  • 1 pkg (15.25 oz) OREO Cookies with Peppermint Cream, finely crushed (run them through a food processor for best results)
  • 1 pkg candy melts (find them at your local craft store)
  • ½ bag starlight mints or a few candy canes, finely crushed

Directions:

  1. Mix cream cheese and crushed Oreos until very well blended.
  2. Use a cookie scooper to scoop out balls and round them with your hands
  3. Place in a single layer on a parchment paper-lined cookie sheet
  4. Place cookie sheet in the freezer for at least 30 minutes (this will allow them to firm up and make the coating process much easier)
  5. Melt the chocolate in the microwave, stirring every 30 seconds until completely melted.
  6. Working quickly, coat cookie balls with chocolate. Use 2 forks to help ensure that they get coated well.
  7. Place coated balls back on the parchment paper and sprinkle with crushed starlight mints/candy canes.
  8. Return oreo cookie balls to the refrigerator for 10 minutes to allow the chocolate to completely firm up.

Just FYI - if you can't find Peppermint Oreos (they release certain varieties to certain stores) look for "Candy Cane Oreos" (I buy these at Target) or you can also replicate this recipe by using regular Oreos and adding 1 teaspoon peppermint extract to the cookie/cream cheese mixture!

I would love to know if you tried this recipe. My family just went nuts for it and I hope that yours will too!

Trying these today! Have you frozen these before? Hoping to freeze a batch for Christmas Eve!

    • Mindi Cherry

I did freeze them, but we just eat them frozen 🙂

I am sure that they will freeze and then thaw just fine.

I made these last night and they are delicious, but my problem is that the choc coating is melting as I left them in a bowl. Should these stay frozen until right before they are to be served? Or should I try the dipping choc rather than morsels? Thank you!

  7. Sue

Would anyone recommend using the chocolate that is specific for dipping ? I made these last night and they were delicious but I am having some issues with the chocolate on the outside melting as they are being eaten.

    • Mindi Cherry

I have made them with semi-sweet morsels, dipping chocolate (the ones you buy at the craft store that come in wafers) as well as the Baker's dipping chocolate tubs that you can buy in the supermarket. I think they taste best with the morsels (just keep them cool until ready to serve), dip the best in the Bakers (the chocolate drips off the best so they look smoother) and "keep the best" (less need to refrigerate) with the melting chips.

So it is really a matter of personal preference. Personally, I would rather just keep them cool until ready to serve by using the morsels

I found peppermint Oreos at Target!

My local Aldi has their brand of Oreos in peppermint this time of year. They
    Are delicious!!

I just made these and they are cooling. Had a time with the chocolate, but managed to get them all coated. I couldn't find peppermint Oreos so I just used green mint and added the peppermint . I wanted to give some to a neighbor who loves Oreos, what packaging is best ? I don't want them to melt on way . Ok thanks

I'm making these right now and they seem very very wet when rolling them up in balls. Will they dry out some while cooling? I used 1 pack of cookies, 1 cream cheese, and about 5 drops of peppermint extract. And I only came out with 24 balls. It tastes good but is really gooey. Any suggestions? They're going in the freezer now.

    • Mindi Cherry

I actually will add another "line" of Oreos to the recipe (packages of Oreos tend to come in 3 lines of cookies). One they are frozen and coated in chocolate, they will be fine. Using more Oreos is just a matter of personal preference!

Just made these. Lots of fun! I did, however, have an issue with the melted chocolate not being enough. The last four had to be coated in finely crushed peppermints instead of chocolate. Look fantastic. My four year old son is very excited to try them and my 11 year old daughter doesn't want to share them with anyone. Will definitely make these again. Thank you for such an easy recipe!

these sound great & so easy. just wondering if you can use other cookies e.g. Chocolate chip (maybe just increase the cream cheese. Any ideas comments?

    • Mindi Cherry

I haven't tried that, but I am pretty sure that would work!

I made these for a Christmas work party and man they were a big hit! I made two batches and that made ~60 balls. I made sure to keep some for the house because they were so delicious. I definitely plan to use this recipe for my family Christmas party. Great recipe and thanks for sharing!
