Blocking:

If you are using natural fiber yarn – Soak the finished granny square for 10 minutes in cool water and squeeze excess water out gently. Do not twist. Lay damp square on blocking boards and use blocking pins to hold in place. Let your granny square dry completely before unpinning.

If you are using synthetic yarn – You can steam block either with a hand steamer or the steam function of your iron by holding the steamer above your granny square for a couple of seconds making sure you don’t touch the yarn otherwise it will burn.

What is the least wasteful crochet stitch? ›

Basic stitches like double crochet or treble crochet tend to use less yarn and produce much taller stitches than the slip stitch and single crochet stitches. Lacy stitches, such as the Solomon's Knot, can use the least amount of yarn to create an open and airy fabric with wide spacing between stitches.

What size yarn is best for granny squares? ›

Choosing Your Yarn

Most patterns for granny squares suggest a worsted weight yarn or thicker. These yarns will have suggested hook size anywhere from 5.5mm for worsted weight to 15mm for super bulky yarn. Remember, the thicker your yarn, the larger your squares will be.

How many chains to start a granny square? ›

Each cluster has three 'posts' in it. Each corner has 2 chains, and on the straight parts of the edge, it has 1 chain. If you look at other granny square patterns sometimes the the chains in between will be different – some people use 3 at the corners – I like using 2 and 1 because it keeps it a bit tighter.

The short answer is it totally depends. A 4-6 round granny square can be made in 10 minutes or less. Large granny square blankets might take 6-8 hours to make.

What is a crochet granny square called? ›

Supposedly, they're called Granny squares because back in the Victorian days, grannies would save scraps of yarn from old socks, leftover projects or unravelled fabric to make scrap squares. These typical patchwork motifs were subsequently put together in a colourful blanket, for babies and later on for adults.

Is it better to sew or crochet granny squares together? ›

All methods have pros and cons. Personally I find sewing blocks together slow and fiddly, and I don't like having to keep stopping to cut a new length of yarn nor having to sew in all the ends. However, sewing can give the most unobtrusive seam, allowing you to abut squares directly.
