This simple crochet shawl for beginners is the perfect project for a beginning crocheter or for those that want a simple, one-cake project with a one row repeat!
The DC All Day Shawl is made with just one crochet stitch – the double crochet stitch in a one-row repeat for a mindless and relaxing crochet project.
The double crochet stitch is my favorite stitch for a relaxing project. It grows quickly and has more drape than a shorter stitch would have with lovely gentle texture.
I am working on a design to be released in a few weeks that will be incorporating this triangle into another larger project which means this pattern is great as a base for other projects as well!

While working on my upcoming design I wanted a triangle shape with a simple stitch repeat since I was making multiple triangles and using color changes for visual interest. The pattern needed to be as easy as possible so I could focus more on the color changes.
As I was working the triangle I realized what a nice scarf it would make all on its own. If you wanted more visual interest you could make it with a self-striping yarn or different size weights of yarn for a different look.
So, after I finished the original design I started playing around with different yarns to see what I could come up with to take this simple crochet shawl for beginners to another level of interesting.
I have several cakes of superfine fingering weight yarn size 1 yarn cakes in my stash. They are always so gorgeous in the store I can never resist them. However, I never seem to actually make anything with them – they just sit on the shelf looking gorgeous and begging to be made into something beautiful.
So, I decided to take a cake of Yarn Bee Rainbow Wrapsody and work two strands of yarn together to create an interesting and unique look. I love using this color work technique and have used it in several other projects as well – my Just Peachy Hat as well as my Mountain Trail Poncho, Blanket, Beanie and Cowl. It is a fantastic way to add a touch of unique to a project.

You could work the two strands from one cake – one strand worked from the center pull and one end from the outside of the cake or you could work from two different cakes instead. I went ahead and used my yarn winder to break my cake into two cakes. I could then center pull both cakes starting at different colors in the cake easily without any tangling. And I ended up with a beautiful gradient scarf that melded all the colors beautifully together.
And with working the two strands together I ended up getting a gauge close to using a DK weight yarn or worsted weight yarn. I worked up some swatches in different weights you can see the difference below.
By using the lightweight yarn I ended up with a lovely light scarf with beautiful drape – perfect for warmer weather this spring!
This pattern is fantastic because you can use any size weight yarn you like to use. Your project will just grow faster or slower depending on the size weight you choose. Working the first 5 rows and using the same size hook (H 5.00 mm crochet hook) for each swatch I ended up with the following:
This easy crochet shawl pattern is completely customizable, too! I decided to go simple in the end but you could certainly add tassels or fringe to add some bling to your finished shawl. And, just go until you get to the size desired – make as large or small as you want. Just keep repeating the one-row repeat! Approximate finished size:42” wingspan x 24.5” tall
Gauge:first 5 rows = 5.5” wide x 3” tall
Abbreviations:
ch(s) = chain(s)
dc = double crochet
sp = space
st = stitch

Pattern Notes:
- Ch 3 at beginning of a row counts as first st.
- Stitch count will increase by 6 stitches each row.
- Pattern is worked with 2 strands of yarn held together.Any size weight yarn can be used as a substitute with either 1 strand or 2 strands held together.
Pattern Instructions
Row 1: ch 4, (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in fourth ch from hook (skipped chs count as first dc st). Turn. (6 dc + ch-2 sp)
Row 2: ch 3, dc in same st, 1 dc in each st to ch-2 corner sp, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in corner sp, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st.Turn.(12 dc + ch-2)
Continue repeating row 2 to size desired.
Fasten off.Weave in ends.
