Born May 19, 1920, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Nathaniel "Barge" Benbow Sr. and Oree Clark Benbow and stepdaughter of the late Essie Gibson Benbow. Educated in the public schools of Clarendon County, Ethel Mae graduated from Scott's Branch High School in 1937. She then furthered her education at Morris College.
In her youth, she was a faithful member of Laurel Hill AME Church in the Davis Station community. Upon relocating to Sumter, she attended Mount Pisgah AME Church. On Jan. 3, 1940, Ethel Mae was united in holy matrimony to Charles H. Logan.
This union was blessed with one daughter, Gloria Jean. Ethel Mae was an intricate part of a rich history in Sumter. She and Charlie proudly owned and operated several successful restaurant businesses, including Green Leaf Cream Land, Lincoln (renamed Logan's and Charlie Logan's Ethel began in the business in 1940 and the Logan continued to operate until May 2001, when her health began to fail. The Logan remains a fixture in the tapestry of East Liberty Street, as it was Ethel Mae's aspiration to return to the business and her family. Survivors include her daughter, Gloria Logan Farmer of the home; a niece raised in the home as a granddaughter, Sonya (Michael) McKnight-Finklin of Columbia; a stepdaughter, Betty (James) Stover of Sumter; a stepson, Charles H.
Logan Jr. of Manhattan, N.Y.; two grandsons, James W. (Rolanda) Stover III and Charles L. She later joined the New Fellowship Baptist Church, where she remained until her death.
She served on various auxiliaries, including the pastor's aide president, senior choir, usher board, missionary society and mother of the church. She was a very faithful member and was loved by all.
