Ludwig, Artist, Dies At Age 81 THE HARTFORD ELLINGTON (Special) Alfred Frank Ludwig, 81, of 2 Elizabeth well known artist and former legislator, died Wednesday at Manchester Memorial Hospital after a short illness. He was born Dec. 14, 1878, i in Ellington, a son of the late Frank and Mary Schindler Ludwig and had lived in this area all his life. He was a member of the Apostolic Christian Church. He began his business career as a carriage and sign painter, and later became an ice dealer, first selling ice cut from his pond in Tolland, and finally establishing a plant for the manufacture of ice, one of the first in this part of the state.

He re retired about 12 years ago. Livig for a time in Tolland, he was active in civic affairs and served for several terms as representative to the General As. sembly and on the Board of Tax Review. Painting was his avocation for many years, and after his retirement he devoted an increasing amount of time, to it. His landscapes of local scenes have been popular at especially the winter scenes and his type of painting led to his being called "Grandpa He was one of the founders of the Tolland County Art and served as its president and on many committees.

He leaves five sons, Alfred I H. of Vernon, Frank A. of New Hampshire, and Walter E. Martin J. and Raymond A.

Knowles, of 397 Campfield St. and formerly of Orange, N.J., died Tuesday at a local private hospital. Born Madison, N.J., she lived in Hartford with her son, William R. Knowles, for the past five years. Besides her son, she leaves three grandchildren.

MRS. MALCOLM BARTON Mrs. Cornelia Watrous Barton, 70, of 236 Grandview wife of Malcolm Barton, died Wednesday morning at her home. Born in East Hampton, she lived about 40 years in Hartford. She attended school in East Hampton and graduated from the Middletown High School in 1907.

She was a member of the First Church of Christ for 38 years, the Society of Mayflower Descendants of the State of Connecticut, the Ruth Wyllys, Chapter of the DAR, the Hart- ford Auxiliary of the American McAll Association, the Hearthstone Club of Hartford, the Garden Club of Hartford and the Center Church Women. Besides her husband, she leaves a son, M. Brewster Barton of New York City; two daughters, Mrs. Priscilla Barton Hutton of Nashville, and Mrs. Hope Barton Fitzpatrick of Bremerton, seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Tomlinson, Farmer, Realty Broker, 55, Dies Herbert H. Tomlinson, 55, of 1135 Sullivan South Windsor, well known real estate broker and dairy farmer in this area for about 20 years, died Wednesday at Manchester Memorial pital after a short illness. He was born in Woodbridge on Aug. 16, 1905 and was a member of the Wapping Community Church, 14-H Club leader, a past president of the Wapping Men's Club, and attended the University of Connecticut where he was a member of the Alfa Gamma Rho fraternity He also belonged to the Guys and Dolls Club of the Wapping Community Church. He leaves his wife, Mrs.

400 Main Manchester Friday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Lehigh U. President Dies at 58 BETHLEHEM, (A) Martin D. Whitaker, 58, president of Lehigh University and a leadTing nuclear physicist, died Wednesday. He underwent surgery for cancer two months ago in Luke's Hospital, where he died.

Before coming to Lehigh June, 1946, he had worked on atomic energy program at Clinton Laboratories in Ridge, helping develop tonium for its use in the A-bomb. Dr. Whitaker was chairman the department of physics at York University until January, 1942, and then went to the metallurgical laboratory at the University of Chicago. A year later was appointed director of Clinton Laboratories. He was charge of their design, construetion and operation, the results which were used in planning Hanford works the state Washington.

Dr. Whitaker was a native Ellenboro, N.C., and was educated at Wake Forest College, the versity of North Carolina New York University. LEO P. HANNING EAST PATCHOGUE, N. Y.

(P) -Leo Patrick Hanning, 58, a former Newsday reporter and columnist, died in Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Tuesday after a long illness. Hanning was best known for his Newsday column, "In the Open," concerning hunting and fishing. He began his 35 year newspaper career with the Waterbury, Republican and American, and joined the staff of the Nassau Star on Long Island in the late 1920s. He continued with the Nassau Daily Review Star after a merger, and joined Newsday in 1943. He retired in 1957.

He leaves his widow. two daughters, a son, three brothers and three sisters. Funeral services were held Wednesday in St. John's Church, Waterbury, Conn. Body of Missing Man Found by Coast Guard STRATFORD (Special) The body of Frederick H.

Reid, 59, a Bridgeport jeweler, was found late Tuesday in Long Island Sound a week after his overturned boat was found. The Coast Guard found the body a short distance from Port Jefferson. Reid set out in his 14-foot outboard motor boat from Port Jefferson headed for Stratford. James L. Roche Dies, Owned Tile Firm James L.

Roche of 333 Blue Hills Ave. died Tuesday at St. Francis Hospital. Born in Suffield he lived about 70 years in ford. He owned and operated the James L.

Roche Tile Co. for 25 years. He was a member of St. Justin's Holy Name Society, the Knights of Columbus and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. His Hills Avenue firm did marble and slate work at many schools and public buildings throughout the state.

Roche was also a member of the Ceramic Tile Contractors Association of Connecticut He leaves his wife, Harriet Pitkat Roche; a son, James F. Roche of Windsor Locks who is Hartford County treasurer; a stepson, M- Sgt. Charles Irons of Bryan, two daughters, Mrs. Helen Johnson of Hartford and Mrs. Mary Alice Hansen of Anaheim, two sisters, Mrs.

Viola Foley of Springfield, and Mrs. Helen Bridgeman of Florence, and 16 grandchildren. The funeral will be held Friday at 9:15 a.m. at the Thomas F. Farley Funeral Home, 96 Webster with a Solemm Requiem Mass in St.

REV. J. J. B. LEIBFRED NEW YORK (P--The Rev.

John J. B. Leibfred, 49, assistant pastor at Holy Family Roman Catholic Church in New Rochelle, N.Y., died of a heart attack Tuesday night, while visiting friends here. Father Leibfred had served in pastorates in New York and Baltimore. Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at Holy Family Church with burial in Holy Mount Cemetery in Tuckahoe, N.Y.

W. G. Colton, Ex-Official, Dies at 65 GRANBY (Special) Walter G. Colton, 65, of North Granby Road, a former second selectmen of the town and a former state representative, died at his home Wednesday after a long illness. He was born in Trenton, N.J.

and lived in Granby most of his life. He was a tobacco and dairy farmer and was chairman of the Granby Highway Safety Committee and the town's Board of Tax Review. Active in Town Colton served in the state Legislature for two consecutive terms. He was a former director of the Frederick H. Cossitt Library.

He was a graduate of Mt. Herman Academy, and a former trustee of the First Congregational Church, a 25-year member of St. Mark's Lodge, AF and AM, and Granby Grange. was also a member of the state and national Grange and Day Star Chapter, OES. He leaves a son, William H.

Colton of Granby; two daughters, Mrs. Waiter Muszynski of Granby and Mrs. Raymond Mojesky of Hartford and six grandchildren. Funeral services will be at p.m. Saturday in the First Congregational Church with the Rev.
